Home Suite (Home)was begun in 2008 and culminated in an installation of video and drawing. Combining stop-motion animation with documentary footage of the recent demolition of my great-grandparents' 100-year old farmhouse, this excerpt illustrates the uncanny progression in the fantastical short video. The footage runs in reverse, essentially re-building the house from rubble, and ends with a stop-motion animated drawing that returns the home to its glory.
This suite of ten drawings depicts the decay, demolition and topographical erasure of the farmhouse, and is based on documentary footage and photographs, as well as my own recollections. The subject matter, choice of media and working process are interwoven. Just as memory is both embellished and tarnished by sentiment, nostalgia and time, the traces of metal that compose these drawings will tarnish to a variety of tones, darkening and disappearing, altering both the image and its meaning in unpredictable ways. I am not striving for accuracy or factuality in these works, but rather an ambient or underlying realism that echoes the incomprehensibility of the home’s absolute disappearance from the landscape.
